Community Education’s Vital Role in Trail Planning
Characterized by its vast open skies and expansive landscapes, Ely, Nevada, is more than its stunning vistas and rugged mountain peaks. The community spirit here is vibrant, especially when it comes to mountain biking. Since June 2025, the construction crews of Trail Solutions have been hard at work at Ward Mountain, finally breaking ground on a project that the community has been eagerly anticipating for almost a decade.
With new trails on the horizon, Ely is inviting everyone to its serene surroundings to explore this hidden gem and discover and experience Ely for yourself, via mountain biking, of course.
Outdoor Recreation Has Always Been The Plan
This rural town prides itself on being a central hub for outdoor recreation. All forms of outdoor activities are welcome here. When it comes to mountain biking, locals are especially supportive of enhancing and expanding the trails.
I recently had the opportunity to chat with Kyle Horvath, Director of Tourism at White Pine County Tourism and Recreation and a member of the Great Basin Trail Stewardship. We discussed Ely and his visionary plans for the trails in the area. According to Kyle, Ely's always been doing something cool. With cherished legacy trails that have been favorites for nearly 20 years, and hosting "Fears, Tears, and Beers", the longest-running Enduro race in America (yup), Ely has a dedicated and growing following of trail seekers.
"It's like riding a little piece of mountain bike history," noted Kyle.
A Little Bit Contemporary, A Little Bit Rustic
Phase one at Ward Mountain, planned to span over two years, aims to elevate and enhance the existing trail system on this beautiful peak. The project includes adding to the existing network, improving sustainability, creating more skill progression opportunities, and ensuring accessibility for riders of all levels.
The key focus of this first phase is building an entirely new climbing trail, creating a gradual and consistent ascent that will stretch approximately four miles once complete. Trail Solutions is committed to preserving the technical and rocky sections, allowing riders to choose their preferred level of difficulty at numerous sections.
"[This next phase on Ward Mountain] is taking something that people already like and making it better and bigger,” said Kyle.
Additional natural and machine-built features, like tabletops, will be added to the segment, Ice Plant, which will now function as a downhill-only trail. Just like the climbing trail, these edits aim to enhance the variety and progression of the trail experience while retaining the existing hand-built trails to preserve the unique character and challenges.
"Being able to have a mix of modern machine-built trails with old school hand-built trails, I think, gives it a little bit of diversity to keep it pretty interesting." Kyle added.
Fully Connecting the Community
Looking ahead to 2026, there are plans for the construction of a connector trail and climb, promising access to a higher mountain experience, taking riders to the summit of Ward Mountain. The climb is designed to be challenging yet rewarding, offering an epic loop that will undoubtedly feature stunning views.
When I asked Kyle what he would wish for if given a magic wand, his answer was clear: "I want a community that is connected to its trails."
A fully connected network that weaves through residential areas, businesses, and the stunning mountainous landscape via trail. Connecting urban trailheads to the mountain trailheads. A ride that could take you from your doorstep to scenic mountain bike trails, to your favorite lunch spot, and back home.
This would be more than just a trail system—it would be a seamless journey that embodies the spirit of Ely, where everyday life and high desert adventure are woven into one continuous experience. That’s the "big mountain journey" Kyle envisions, and the future this community is working toward.
While ambitious, I believe that this dream can become a reality. After experiencing the beauty of this place, the thrill of its trails, and the warmth of its people, it’s clear that Ely possesses the passion and potential to transform visions into vibrant experiences.
No magic wands or fairy godmothers required. Just a community moving together, one connected trail at a time.
Focusing on Education and Engagement
On August 22 and 23, an IMBA Trail Care School took place in Ely, drawing a small but dedicated group of just two attendees. Although the turnout was modest, the event offered a uniquely personal and intimate learning environment. Participants had the opportunity to ask specific questions tailored to their individual needs, allowing for a deep dive into the vital skills necessary for effective trail maintenance.
The Trail Care Schools serve as an invaluable educational resource, teaching volunteers the ins and outs of trail maintenance. These sessions present community members with a fantastic chance to engage and understand how they can play a crucial role in the preservation and upkeep of their local trails.
As Construction Manager Jeff Lehmann states, "It has been proven that outdoor recreation can revitalize a rural community."
After spending the first half of the day in the classroom, attendees had the opportunity to step outside and apply their knowledge in a practical setting, getting hands-on experience that brings their lessons to life.
In addition to attending the Trail Care School, Ely participates in various events aimed at maintaining the trails they have worked so hard to develop. Events like "Fears, Tears, and Beers" and "Race the Rails" contribute to trail maintenance, support local initiatives, and ensure that 100% of the money raised goes toward tools and supplies for volunteers. The NICA team here also has to put in volunteer hours.
And y'all, we haven't even discussed the complete signage package that will be designed and installed at Ward Mountain. Another blog for another time. Don't worry, we'll keep you updated, fill you in, spill the tea, whatever the cool kids are saying these days.
Method for the Masses
Ely may not be the first place that comes to mind for mountain biking, but its commitment to improvement is changing that perception. With a variety of trails, every ride here transforms into a unique adventure. The essence of this project is all about foresight—it's a testament to planning for growth rather than reacting to it. By addressing the inevitable crowds now, Ely is setting the stage for a thriving trail community in the future. As Kyle aptly puts it, "I'm just stoked to give them more."
People already block out time on their calendars to ride in Ely. But there’s no better time than now to join the ride!
